Tiivistelmä: | In this article the use of informal networks by 50 small manufacturing firms in rural and urban areas of Florida is explored to provide a comparison to the growing literature on formal small manufacturing networks. Small firms use informal networks for various types of advice (product development, competitive concerns, labor issues). They often use both formal and informal networks together in the relationships with suppliers and customers. Rural firms tend to use fewer links and after good information sources are found, they are slow to change. Urban firms on the contrary use a greater number of linkages and more frequently. Evidence of informal networks evolving to formal networks is not found. |
