Tiivistelmä: | Women are still less likely to start new businesses than men. In most countries the economic growth potential is gendered, and when there are not enough paid employment opportunities, more hopes are targeted to women. The article considers womens self employment in the Nordic Countries and examines how the individual and societal factors affect self-employment preferences. Across the countries the perceptions of self-employment skills seem to be the most significant factor affecting self-employment. The universal Scandinavian model explaining womens self-employment activities similarly in different countries is challenged in the article. The authors conclude on two things. First, they find that gender has become a key factor in new business establishment activities. Second, they demonstrate the similarities and differences across countries and highlight the importance of culture regarding gender and entrepreneurship. |
