Tiivistelmä:This article deals with the important role of complementary assets in explaining sustainable competitive advantage and innovations in the resource-based view of company strategy in evolutionary economics. It is argued in the paper that there is a major weakness in the strategic theory of the firm. Problems with cooperation and coordination are discussed widely in the contract-based theories of the firm, but the authors attempt to integrate some of these insights in to a resource-based perspective. This article shows how complementary assets raise the need for strategic planning by the firms' top management. Furthermore, complementary assets magnify internal incentive problems and their management has an affect on firm innovativeness. The authors build their framework and findings on literature on corporate strategy, industry evolution and organizational structures.
