| Tiivistelmä: | Previous research on strategic alliance outcomes from the transaction cost perspective is limited, because researchers have inferred opportunistic behaviour rather than directly measuring it and observing the relationship with alliance performance. This paper draws upon a case example of US healthcare industry to examine factors associated with opportunistic behaviour and alliance outcomes. The results show that partner trustworthiness and contractual safeguards are negatively related to opportunistic behaviour, and that opportunistic behaviour is negatively related to alliance performance. Mutual equity investments were found to be unrelated to opportunism, which somewhat contradicts the transaction cost logic. |
