Tiivistelmä:The United Kingdom is one of the very few western European countries with neither a statutory minimum wage nor widespread minimum rates set by legally-binding collective agreements at central or sectoral level. While wages councils currently set minima for some 2.3 million workers, these bodies are soon to be abolished, and collective bargaining is conducted mainly at company or establishment level and covers only around half of the workforce. The history of minimum pay setting in the UK, the current position and the debate on a national minimum wage are examined.
