Tiivistelmä:On a comparative basis it is shown that the labor unions in Great Britain and West Germany use European social space as a resource in opposite ways. This raises a prospective question about national unions' capabilities to use this new space for making new demands, especially on working day and/or working hours. A historical account on unions' policy is given. Some macroeconomic changes are forecasted. The role of legislation is examined. The new tasks of collective bargaining are reviewed. Some conclusions are drawn as an aid to the strategy making of unions.
