Tiivistelmä:The role of management is examined at the level at which strategic decisions in industrial relations are taken in organizations. A framework is presented which combines the study of employers, trade unions and collective bargaining into what is termed a "pattern of industrial relations management". The analysis is based on case studies of manufacturing organizations from 1977-1983 and on other published sources. Four patterns of industrial relations management are described and assessed. The key insight of this analysis of the patterns of industrial relations management is that it shows a mismatch or inconsistency between management structure, bargaining structure and trade union activity.
