Tiivistelmä:Key concepts associated long wave cycles with a series of waves of basic technological innovation, and with substitution among energy sources. These observations are combined with the life cycles of exhaustive resources. The theory states that long wave cycles are caused by a phenomenon whereby the rapid growth of certain dominant technologies ultimately strains or overwhelms the supply of natural resources upon which they are dependent. This mechanism is transitory in human history and is analogous to the natural growth mechanism of all living organisms. Supporting data present technological feedback loops associated with coal and steel in the last century and petroleum, natural gas and metal alloys in ours.
