Tiivistelmä:Traditional merit programs don't work. They frustrate managers, confuse employees and have no apparent return on investment to executives who only see a never-ending costs escalation. Most companies simply ignore the problem. Some have tried to communicate the principles with the hope that if employees understand how the device works, it will be accepted. Other companies developed one-time incentive or reward systems. It is shown that the majority of these altenatives are not true solutions. Two issues must be addressed if merit programs are to be converted into true pay-for-performance programs: 1. Redefining what is meant by performance; 2. linking pay to this new definition. The advatages of value-added pay are explained.
