Tiivistelmä:The funding formula for medical education is based on an econometric study of hospital costs. This has since been subject to criticism. Recently it has been suggested that the allocation may be a gross overstatement of the true cost of teaching medical undergraduates. Scottish hospitals are studied, as a representative sample of British hospitals. The significance of results is discussed for teaching at hospitals. The expenditure on education is less than the sum earmarked by the health department, but well within the range given the margin of error in its estimation. Training nurses add to the cost. Education adds to the cost of a hospital as well.
