Tiivistelmä: | A chemical industry study shows that consistent investment in R and D (research and development) might prevent a company from being acquired. The characteristics of chemical companies are investigated which were acquired or restructured and the mixed conclusions of the literature are explained. In the moderately R and D-intensive chemical industry, the acquired and restructured firms were below-average R and D investors for years prior to their problems. They were also cutting R and D much more frequently than better-performing companies. Significantly lagging the competition in R and D investment weakened these companies. |
