Tiivistelmä:In this paper the effects of codetermination on short-run investment incentives of employers and employees are investigated in a microeconomic model. In the model employers can invest in additional physical capital or employees in their human capital. Codetermination leads to negotiations on severance payments in case of layoffs. This creates an employment rigidity. Contrary to the previous literature it is shown that codetermination can lead to higher short-run capital investments by employers. When considering investment in specific human capital by employees it is shown that one has to differentiate between two types of investments. Codetermination leads to lower incentives for productivity enhancing human capital investments but to higher incentives for investments in the reduction of the employee's private costs of work (original in German).
