Tiivistelmä:The relative contributions of intensity and structural effects on changes in aggregate energy intensities in the manufacturing sector in Taiwan are examined. An index approach is employed. It allows additive decomposition of the logarithmic growth rate of sectorial energy intensity into the logarithmic growth rates of energy intensities and output shares of individual industries. The analysis shows that the improvements in energy intensity of individual manufacturing subgroups at the two-digit level were the main influences on the decline in aggregate manufacturing sector fuel and electricity intensities. The structural shift effect was, however, relatively insignificant to energy intensity changes, mostly due to a subgroup effect.
