| Tiivistelmä: | The debate on which countries will meet the criteria for admission to European Monetary Union by the required date and whether currency union will in fact be realised at the start of 1999 has intensified over recent months. Back in 1994 it seemed certain that France, along with other countries, would meet all the criteria by 1997, yet in the course of 1995 its growing problems with public deficit and debt, especially in the area of social security, led to growing doubts whether the public deficit can be reduced to 3% of GDP in time. |
