Tiivistelmä:Inexpensive local area networks (LANs) offer basic print and file sharing capabilities for small work groups and branch offices where enterprise networks cannot be justified or supported. Most LANs are targeted at small businesses, but some sizeable companies are making use of them for work groups. Not every work group needs the kind of industrial strength features that a VINES, NetWare 3.11 or LAN Manager brings to the table. Some of these peer-to-peer networks can be set up for less than USD 400, including network interface cards and cabling. A selected list of vendors offering low-cost, peer-to-peer operating systems for linking DOS-based PCs in LANs is presented.
