| Tiivistelmä: | UK economy needs a world class manufacturing sector, but short termism inhibits UK investment in Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) in four areas: appraisal methodologies; corporate governance; financial market forces; and macroeconomic regulation. The impact of high discount rates on AMT and on long-term investment is demonstrated. A three-stage methodology for appraising AMT investments is developed, and the advantages of better informed and more involved providers of funds are pointed out. More varied macroeconomic controls are suggested. |
