| Tiivistelmä: | Environmental impact analysis (EIA) involves the identification, prediction and analysis of environmental and social impacts and the analysis of policy alternatives. There are seven different approaches to EIA, each of them offers certain advantages and limitations, and there are some important common features. A synthesis of both the bottom-up and top-down approaches combining the best features from the seven approaches is suggested. This synthesized approach was used to carry out an EIA on a coalfield project. From this experience the recommended steps for carrying out an EIA are extensive, starting with a preliminary goal definition through impact analysis to final recommendations. |
