| Tiivistelmä: | The journey of the Valdez Principles, which were written in the wake of the March 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska's Prince William Sound, illustrates the difficulty of persuading corporations to voluntarily go beyond what is required by law. Indeed portions of the principles have been recently rewritten - some say watered down - to attract large companies to sign. Now, for example, there is a disclaimer that says the principles are nonbinding. The ten principles commit companies to, among other things, publicly disclose information about environmental performance, "redress" environmental damage, minimize pollution, and conserve natural resources. |
