| Tiivistelmä: | The long established view that the British non-ferrous mining industry was revolutionized in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries by immigrant German experts and imported technology was never well supported by available evidence. Most British mining districts continued to rely mainly on "appropriate" simple, small-scale, low-capital, "medieval" techniques until the latter part of the seventeenth century. This article considers the forces that did propel the industry towards modern large-scale organization. |
