CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Tiivistelmä:The UK construction industry is one of the country's largest providers of jobs; even in the depth of the recession in the early 1990s it employed more than 1.5 million people. But in personnel terms it could almost be another country - to paraphrase L P Hartley, they do things differently there. Slowly but surely, the industry has been going through a radical change in the way work is organised. This change has taken place over 20 years but has remained largely undocumented, and personnel practitioners are becoming increasingly concerned about its effect on standards in areas such as training and development. The increasing use of contract labour and highly flexible working practices has now been documented in a major study by the University of Greenwich Business School.
