| Tiivistelmä: | The costs of intermediation are a pressing problem of the Slovenian banking system with negative consequences on the economy as a whole.The article is divided into three parts.In the first part some basic elements needed for the understanding of the process of financial intermediation are explained.The second part deals with the functions of financial intermediaries and the development of the theory of financial intermediation.Next, the role of commercial banks as the most important financial intermediaries is emphasised.The methodology of the analysis is explained in the beginning of the third part of the article and is followed by the results obtained quarterly and later on yearly basis.The analysis was made for the important period beginning just three months after the Republic of Slovenia's independence and its monetary sovereignty up to the beginning of 1994 when the results of the reconstruction of banks were visible.Although the trends are encouraging, the analysis shows that the costs of financial intermediation in Slovenia are still relatively high and further actions are needed to lower them to acceptable levels. |
