Tiivistelmä:The structure and the condition of the financial system in Croatia, above all in banks being its most important part and practically the only financial institution, are determined by the heritage of socialism ond the war. This is why the pace of change is slower than either expected or needed. The analysis ot the system and its international comparison prove that next to banks and savings banks, which are institutionally well organised, it is necessary to establish a legal basis for the functioning of other financial institutions, the securities market and a minimum basis for the employment of credit and non-credit instruments and methods of financing. All this has been neglected so for or has not been used at all.The analysis of the situation in banks in Croatia shows that in spite of the inherited problems of the past, which are still present in the balance sheets of banks, and some additional problems, which are the result of the war, there has been substantial development and a positive trend during the last five years. At the level of the whole banking system the key problem areas are immobilised assets and liquidity.
