The West's involvement with it grew dramatically in the 19th century when explorers, missionaries and traders set out to either discover natural wonders, convert the "dark continent" or make a fortune out of it. By the 1930s, virtually the whole continent had been divided among the European powers. Only Liberia managed to escape the clutches of colonialism. |
