Tiivistelmä:The author of this article states that disenchanted with traditional team building outcomes, Northumbrian Water turned to systems thinking and the complexity sciences for inspiration. He also sates that some of the more exuberant claims of the so-called 'new science' may well be suspect. The underlying messages though reaffirm what is often marginalized by traditional management thinking. There is the need for a holistic view of performance. There is also the need to understand organisations, including teams, as dynamic social systems that create their own realities. The author generates a wide-angled view of team performance that is summarized in the first part of the paper. The article shows how new mental model was translated into practical team-based business improvements.
