| Tiivistelmä: | The paper answers the questions what is the optimum balance of research versus development (i.e., of investment in fundamental understanding versus in specific new materials, devices and systems) and how one should decide among investments in research, development and acquisition of equipment based on existing technology. If fundamental knowledge gained from scientific research, and new technologies from development investments, give us more choices in an uncertain future, then what difference these future options should make in one's R&D decisions. These are strategic research and technology management questions. Corporate financial analysis can inform strategic R&D decisions, as the authors show in the three examples to follow. |
