Tiivistelmä:This paper examines the connection btw. earnings management (herein as: e-mgmt.) and corporate social responsibility (CSR). E-mgmt. practices are herein argued to damage the collective interests of stakeholders. Thus, managers manipulating earnings can deal with stakeholder activism and vigilance by resorting to CSR practices.
Using archival data from a multi-national panel sample of nearly 600 firms from 26 countries from 2002 to 2004, a positive impact of e-mgmt. practices on CSR is found. This relationship holds for different robustness checks. Also, it is demonstrated that the combination of e-mgmt. and CSR has a negative impact on financial performance.
