Tiivistelmä: | Due to the significant impact of business people's decisions on multiple constituents, their decision-making matters. Unethical decisions harm both the decision makers and others, whereas ethical decisions have the opposite effect. Based on data on strategic decision making by both effective and less effective CEOs, I show a model for ethical business decision making in which conscious reasoning and subconscious intuition interact through forming, recalling, and applying moral principles. Based on the CEOs, I apply a fairly new theory, rational egoism, as the essential content of the model and justify it to be consistent with the conditions of business success. In addition to explaining the processes of forming and applying principles, I describe rational egoism and demonstrate the model in the case of downsizing. I conclude with suggestions for further research and ethical decision making in business. |
