| Tiivistelmä: | One problem encountered in the design of flexible manufacturing systems is the layout of machines and stations, called for simplicity, the machine layout problem. It is shown that the machine layout problem cannot be formed as a quadratic assignment formulation because the machine sizes are genarally not equal, and hence, the distance between the sites is not fixed. Various basic patterns of layouts in flexible manufacturing systems are identified. New heuristic construction algorithms are developed for solving large scale machine layout problems. The heuristics' performance is compared with a number of existing algorithms for the facility layout problem, and their computation time performance is found to be attractive. |
