Tiivistelmä:Data communications research is being passed from ARPANET, the world's first packet switching network, to the Internet. "The Internet" is the colloquial name for the largest operational superset of research-oriented internets. Its three major subnetworks are ARPANENT, CSNET (Computer Science Network), and NSFNET (National Science Foundation Network). The size and complexity of Internet are characterized. The aims of Internet are summarized: allowing researchers to interact, eliminating costly gateways etc.. The Internet features are specified. Some future utilization of ARPANET is highlighted.
