Tiivistelmä:The dynamic model of manufacturing focuses on learning and competence building. The model has been suggested to be the essence of Japanese manufacturing success. In contrast, scholars argue that USA manufacturing bases strategic decisions on static short-term cost minimizing paradigms. The precision electronics industry was selected for comparison. The samples were taken from companies in Japan and the Silicon Valley. Top management involvement, quality, and manufacturing strategy are discussed within the framework of the "dynamic evolution" model. It is shown that both countries adhere to dynamic views. Some differences were found, however, in operational policy making and control, and quality attitudes of managers.
