| Tiivistelmä: | Compact disc - read-only memory /CD-ROM/ can hold 600 megabytes of information. Ordinary PCs work well as CD-ROM workstations. CD-ROM systems have been too exotic and expensive to be considered as replacements for remote databases. But as hardware prices for CD-ROM go down and telecom costs rise, CD-ROM becomes economical. A comparison is presented of the use of host databases and CD-ROM databases. A new database market emerges as CD-ROM becomes more popular, and a number of vendors enter the CD-ROM market. A list of companies supplying authoring, indexing and premastering systems in the USA is presented. There are several Europe-based firms as well. |
