Tiivistelmä:Women's wages on average are much lower than men's wages in the UK. Much attention has been directed towards estimating the proportion of male-female wage differential due to "gender discrimination". The purpose is to provide new estimates of gender discrimination using better data than before, collected in the 1980 Women and Employment /WES/ survey. For the first time, estimates of discrimination based on real work experience data are presented. The implications of human capital theory for men's and women's earnings functions and the measurement of gender discrimination are discussed. This provides the foundation for the critical review of previous studies. The degree of gender discrimination in 1980 is estimated.
