Tiivistelmä:It attempts to test the efficiency wage model by examining some of its predictions for the determinants of a firm's productivity. The basic data source is the published accounts of 219 UK manufacturing companies over the period 1972-82. The evidence is that firm-level productivity increases when either relative wages rise, or the level of unemployment rises. This provides some support for the efficiency wage models. However, it is possible that the results are consistent with other theories. A prime candidate for an explanation of the results is the existence of unobserved human capital. A second alternative explanation is the existesce of rent-sharing.
