| Tiivistelmä: | In December 1991, virtually simultaneous meetings took place of the heads of state of the European Community in Maastricht and of Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian leaders in Belovezhskaia Forest. At the former of these meetings, the birth of the European monetary-economic union was very solemnly formalized. In Belovezhskaia Forest, such a question was not even raised. It was evidently assumed that, even with the termination of the existence of the Soviet Union, the common economic space would continue by itself without any additional effort on the part of the members of the newly emerged CIS. |
