Tiivistelmä:The debates on the economic and monetary integration in Europe nowadays include the question as to whether or not social union should be established within the broader context of this integration. Arguments are presented that inappropriate operation of labour markets, poor working conditions, inadequate security in the place of work , unemployment, accidents etc. have negative impact on distributive processes within the community. The tasks of national states regarding social policy are investigated. An ex-ante harmonization of social policies is regarded as unnecessary. Rather, the allocative efficiency of economic and monetary union, competition, an unrestricted flow of productive factors are seen as keys to social problems.
