Tiivistelmä:The issue presents the working paper based on the findings of an international research programme. The aim is to make a comparative analysis of the interactions btw. European integration and sub-regional cooperation, placing it in a historical setting. There are four European sub-regions selected for the study: the Benelux countries (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg), the two Iberian countries (Spain and Portugal), the three Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia), and the founder members of CEFTA (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia). The focus is on the economic implications of sub-regional cooperation and European integration. The paper consists of the summary (part 1), theoretical issues (chapter 1), history and present state of intra-regional cooperation (chapter 2), comparative analysis (chapter 3), surveys of the relations of the four groups mentioned (chapter 4), interdependence btw. cooperation and European integration (chapters 5 and 6).
