Tiivistelmä:This paper investigates the competitive and economic implications of information technology, decentralizing decision rights, and consolidating tasks during process reengineering. In a time-based competitive marketplace, centralized decision making and bundled tasks are superior to other process designs: hence information technology investments should be directed at increasing skill levels and improving communications between the line workers and management. The work system depends on the variability in customer demands. On the other hand, a company facing competition on quality may lose out on market share if it focuses on profit maximization in the short run. It may be necessary to decentralize decision rights if the variability of customer specification is high.
