Tiivistelmä:The Balts played a starring role in the drama of Soviet disintegration. Several aspects of that role deserve additional discussion. Why did the Balts focus their efforts of "fraternal assistance" in some areas while ignoring others? Why were activists in some parts of the Soviet Union highly receptive to Baltic influences while others were not? Why did the Baltic challenge provoke such deep conflicts in Russian politics? The available evidence suggests that the Baltic movements concentrated on assisting activists in neighboring Slavic regions.
