Tiivistelmä:This paper examines the performance effects of major job cuts. Based on data from Compustat S&P database, dealt with is the longitudinal impact of workforce (hereafter as: w-f.) reductions (as: rdts.) on labour productivity (as: lbr-prdty.) and operational indebtedness (as: opr-inds.) of 239 U.S. and Canadian companies. It is shown that firms substantially cutting jobs failed to improve their lbr-prdty. and their opr-inds. Statistical analysis surprisingly revealed that firms cutting the highest proportions of their workforce had a significant deterioration of their opr-inds. and a non-significant change of their lbr-prdty. These results challenge the economic legitimacy of major w-f. rdts. increasingly institutionalized to the disadvantage of the strategic approach of human resource management (HRM).
