Tiivistelmä: | Very few studies examining people's ability to understand simple concepts and rules from probability theory have drawn representative (here as: repr.) samples from the public. This study explores a repr. sample of 1.000 Swiss citizens, using six probabilistic (as: probl.) problems. It is found that most citizens reasoned appropriately in problems representing pure applications of probability theory. However, they failed to do so in approximations of real world scenarios. In addition, education is associated with probl. numeracy in the former but not the latter type of problems. |
