Tiivistelmä:Building on the study of Beck, Demirguc-Kunt, and Levine (2006), this paper explores the effects of both borrower and lender competition (hereafter as: comp.) as well as information sharing (as: i-shrg.) through credit bureaus/registries (here as: brs/regs.) on corruption (as: corr.) in bank lending (as: b-ldng). Based on the unique World Bank data set (WBES) consisting of more than 4.000 firms from 56 countries with information on credit brs/regs., gathered by Djankov, McLiesh, and Shleifer (2007) and bank regulation data collected by Barth, Caprio, and Levine (2006), there is found strong evidence that both banking comp. and i-shrg. reduce lending corr., and that i-shrg. also helps enhancing the positive effect of comp. in curtailing lending corruption.
