| Tiivistelmä: | In strategic alliances, formal and relational governance (here as: gov.) mechanisms (hereafter as: f-and-r-gov-msms.) are used in order to coordinate resources and alleviate the risk of opportunistic behaviour. Based on data of the gov. choices and subsequent performance (as: perf.) of alliances in the German telecommunications industry, the optimal configuration of f-and-r-gov-msms. is found to be dependent on the assets involved in an alliance, with formal mechanisms best suited to property-based assets and relational gov. best suited to knowledge-based assets. Moreover, the perf. of the alliance can be harmed by a mismatch btw. asset type and gov. mechanisms. |
