Tiivistelmä:In order to model the importance of study mode in students' choice of university, this paper uses conjoint analysis. Study mode was proposed as a key choice attribute with universities having diversified their means of delivering education, increasing the use of online delivery. Results are reported for two conjoint experiments: 1. investigating how undergraduate students made trade-offs btw. study mode, tuition fees and university, and 2. examining similar trade-offs made by current and prospective postgraduates. The importance of study mode to both groups is confirmed. Two main reasons are suggested for its influence on university choice: it affects students' learning and socializing experiences, and their time and place flexibility. For undergraduates and postgraduates, the most preferred study modes were face-to-face study and print-based study, respectively. With the trend towards online delivery, the findings have relevance to universities across national systems and markets by reputation.
