Tiivistelmä:This article investigates to wich degree the women's fertility decisions depend on greater gender symmetry in child care by analysing and comparing second births in Denmark and Spain, two countries that represent opposite ends in fertility and public support for working mothers. Specifically, the purpose is to examine the importance of fatherly care for women with a strong career orientation. The authors use event-history techniques and the data from European Community Household panel. The results show that the Danish women are more likely to have second child because welfare state support helps the reconciliation of motherhood and carees. In addition, it is demonstrated that due to bargaining between the spouses the Danish women can reduce the opportunity cost of motherhood via fatherly child care.
