| Tiivistelmä: | The creation of a free trade area in the Western Hemisphere is an ambitious goal launched by Heads of State of 34 governments at the Summit of the Americas in Miami in December 1994. A major preparatory process has been underway over the last two years, and negotiations are to be launched formally in April 1998, at the Second Summit of the Americas in Santiago de Chile. Negotiations for the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) are to be concluded no later than 2005, at which point the implementation of commitments to actually bring about a hemispheric-wide region of lowered trade and investment barriers should begin. |
