Tiivistelmä:The Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (FTA), predecessor of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), owes its existence to the insufficiencies of the rules of the GATT 1947 and of its dispute settlement mechanism. Canada, the United States and, subsequently, Mexico sought not only to reinforce the principles of free trade, but also to ensure that the rules thus set out would be respected.
