Tiivistelmä:Accommodating the food security fears of the net food- importing countries, on the one hand, and the circumvention and displacement concerns of the net food-exporting countries, on the other, constituted one of the important challenges for the Uruguay Round negotiations on agriculture. This article analyses the type of compromise reached at the end of that Round, identifies some of the problem areas and concludes with some general perspectives for the future. Also the author states that the solution adopted by the WTO to the problems of net food- importing countries is far from satisfactory. Food aid still remains an important weapon of the foreign policy for the donors, unconstrained by the WTO legal system.
