| Tiivistelmä: | 1995 was potentially quite significant for the development of the internal policy of the European Union, with the ground being laid for major advancement in three key areas: Most significantly, the timetable was agreed for the third (and final) stage of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The Schengen Accord finally became operational, but with only six countries participating fully. It removed most of the remaining controls on the movement of people within at least part of the Union. The European Police Office (EUROPOL) convention was agreed (subject to the resolution of one major difficulty), although it will be some time before it becomes operational. |
