| Tiivistelmä: | This section examines the main political developments in the Member States that have implications for the European Union and the EU issues that reverberated in domestic debates on Europe. 1996 could be characterized as the year of EMU, the Intergovernmental Conference and continuing difficulties between the United Kingdom and its partners. The Member States all had to sharpen their attitudes towards the single currency, notably their capacity and willingness to participate in this major regime change. In addition, the Member States had to articulate, more fully than previously, their approach to treaty change. |
