| Tiivistelmä: | The high correlation between national savings and domestic investment rates has been interpreted as evidence that capital is not internationally mobile. The theoretical and empirical literature is surveyed. The empirical relationship between national savings and domestic investment is clarified. In a sample of 23 OECD countries a positive correlation between savings and investment rates is found in both the short and long runs. The implications of this correlation for capital mobility, however, are unclear. A wide variety of models produce co-movements in savings and investment in response to exogenous disturbances. Thus, little evidence on the question of international capital mobility is offered. |
